  11. INSTALLATION

  14. Sawmill ships in a BinHexed self-extracting archive.  You can unBinHex it
  15. using a program like Aladdin Systems StuffIt Expander
  16. (http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html).  Expander will also
  17. automatically uncompress the result, but if you are not using Expander, you
  18. can uncompress it manually by double-clicking the icon whose name ends with
  19. .sea.

  21. This will result in a folder called sawmill, containing the Sawmill
  22. application and this README file.
  23.  
  24. If you plan to use Sawmill in web-server mode (recommended), you can start
  25. using Sawmill immediately by double-clicking the application.  Sawmill will
  26. establish itself as a web server on some port (8987 by default), and will
  27. print a message describing how to access it from your web browser.  You 
  28. will access it using an URL something like this:

  30.   http://my.hostname.com:8987/

  32. If you plan to use Sawmill as an ACGI program, instead of using web-server
  33. mode, then you need to move the Sawmill application to your web server's
  34. CGI directory, and run it as a CGI program, something like this:

  36.   http://my.web.server.com/cgi-bin/sawmill.acgi

  38. To determine where your CGI directory is, and other details about how
  39. Sawmill interacts with your web server, it may be useful to consult the Web
  40. Servers section of the online documentation (see THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION,
  41. below).

  43. In either case, when you access the URL from your web browser, Sawmill will
  44. lead you through the startup process (which is simpler in web server mode
  45. than in CGI mode).
